For the past few years, I’ve wanted to find a “good time” to play Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version, an RPG that my friends and family have lost friends to as D&D devotees. I decided to try it for the first time, but there was no powerful PC at game launch, so the best performance was available on other consoles. As far as I’m concerned, I liked the rules, but I also went through so much that I felt guilty and ended badly, and I can’t wait to move on–at least not to start. But overall, Baldur’s Gate 3’s is the culmination of a great game that has just been released. The last thing players want out of Larion is in the game itself, not a rogue level trial. This means there are a ton of new metrics to play with, and it looks like some long-term trends are coming. (Also) There’s a photo mode available for people who want to document their trip to the Lost World or take a nice photo of the Austerian, print it out, print it, sleep in their room, and pack it away. Cross-play has allowed me and many others to cross the line between console and PC, and the gameplay has been much more fun than ever. The future of the game is in the hands of dedicated and committed fans. Now just go through door 3.
I’m not asking Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version or Larian to support the game for long after release. I’m sure a lot of people are excited about it. The game was panned when it first came out, and many aspects of it show that. Thankfully, the latter in particular feels weighed down by a lot of technical debt and deadlines that made it impossible for the studio to oversee pre-ship, and I’m happy for players who have found increasingly good content since then. Any game that does that is a great thing, and while that’s certainly true, Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version is no different. But between the much-needed changes and the addition of well-being, this is a game that’s unlike anything many people have heard of before 2023, and is still struggling to keep up after all this time.
Shortly after everyone’s excitement reignited, the studio moved to a larger space, and soon the universe of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version was constantly evolving. Every time I try to pick it up and play (whether it’s on a console or my broken laptop), I feel like I’m constantly trying to get up. “Mintara will be summoned after Patch X.” Good job. – Durg Larian is a better player if you have a bad heart. Of course, why not? “I just wanted to play without losing the most important character in Withers.” Good people, after all.
There are weeks where we hear that recently cut scenes (cuts and dialogue) are put back into the game, the story is changed several times, and the story is changed several times. Patch 6 enhanced the game by fixing and adding love, while Patch 7 introduced different endings for players who completed the game. In a similar move to Mass Effect 3, Patch 5 created an entirely new game that rarely ever happened, to preserve the successes of a game with a thousand game changes. While I’ve been able to get most of the games for cheap in my short time, it seems unlikely that Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version will be released anytime soon.
D&D is often referred to as a hardcore role-playing game due to its obsession with 5e mechanics, but to be clear, Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version, which has been updated in a variety of ways since its 2023 release (and, of course, its 2020 release), is not the last. At some point down the road, I regret that Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version will be abandoned like other games that have been announced like that. This post-release lifetime support service continues indefinitely until the game is no longer as successful as before. But like the masochistic pleasure offered in the name of survival, I’ve seen my favorite players consume themselves in similar ways.
Unfortunately, that was not the case with Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version. With the final chapter, the story is finally over. All the variables come into play, and now we just have to decide what to do. Part of me is sad that I missed out on the superpowers of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Definitive Version. There were even subtexts that made it a little annoying that I wasn’t at ground level, as I saw this beautiful glowing thing walking around, trying to figure out what was going on. But a big part of me was just glad there was no going back, and I would always put it off until another and better time. But if you don’t mind, you’ll meet Shadowheart soon enough.
