Astro Bot Review is turning a 30-year-old PlayStation classic into a holiday classic. But even if you can’t summon Kratos from Clank, Astrobot can still create a beautiful, well-designed 3D puzzle in its own right. It’s our editors’ pick for the PlayStation 5 and one of the year’s best games.
Astro Bot’s Gameplay
If you watched the free Astro Playroom demo released on PS5 in 2020, the Astrobot house should look familiar to you. But Astro Bot Review is about to expand its range. Exploration takes you through six galaxies the size of the original Astro playground. The journey takes about 10 hours.
Any kids’ 3D space platformer will instantly fit in with Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy. So it’s impressive how Astro Bot Review handles one of the best games ever made. Like Super Mario Galaxy, Astrobot uses its interstellar setting as an excuse to entertain players with plenty of fun side quests, where the development team explores Esobi’s flawed ideas and makes them interesting. Some ideas are more innovative than others, but you can’t go wrong.
For example, you can attack an empty construction tower, dive into a sea of clouds, drink water from a bucket, climb a Killigain tree, and run through a forest of trees before chasing down a ghost with a flashlight. Some features are recycled from previous Astro games, but the clean, colorful, and cybernetic aesthetic of Astro Bot Review is nicely executed and enhanced on the PS5 with solid particles and gorgeous animations.
Reaching the end of each level is fun. But before you reach your destination, you’ll have to stop and turn around. Each level has hidden friendly ships to find. Including a random portal in the hidden levels. A minimum number of robots are required before a new location opens. Pay attention to finding the ship and appreciate the sequence in each location. It’s a bit annoying that Astro Bot Review dies after just one hit. You can view the map to see the levels and bonus difficulty levels.
Potent Power-Ups
Astro Bot Review’s best features are walking, standing, and swinging the swing until it becomes an axe. These weapons themselves don’t offer the same level of action as Penny’s Big Breakaway or Super Mario Odyssey. However, Astro played well. The simple premise of this is heavily influenced by the nature of the game.
The Astro Playroom provided Astro with a variety of characters for a while, some of which have returned here. But the Astro Bot Review proved too much. In addition to gaming, some of these powerhouses can control entire casino platforms for themselves. Spider Power allows you to adapt and grow at will to explore new opportunities. Dan’s powers pull Astro’s arm and flick the remote switch or turn it into a sword. After the elephant trunk released the stick, Astro used it again as a base. Action steps apply to DualSense controllers, such as transitions and repeated controls, which are not remembered. Fortunately, they are easy to remove.
The developers of Astro Bot Review are smart enough to make the mechanics feel like experts when you play them. Many powers are shown throughout the levels, but this ability comes into play during the boss fights. With PlatinumGames designs, these mechanical monsters had me screaming and screaming as Astro’s powers were powered up to their core. When the boss throws projectiles at you, the goal is to maximize your time in the air and avoid the projectiles until you reach the other side. He led the way.
PlayStation All-Stars
Astro Bot Review’s core gameplay is strong enough to shine on any platform, but it’s also an irreverent love letter to PlayStation hardware and the beloved games that have graced the system over the years. Sony’s nostalgia comes in an interesting twist. The PlayStation symbol represents money, while a restored spaceship section represents the PS5’s architecture.
Additionally, some of the bots will let you rescue classic PlayStation characters from third-party studios and partners. You’ll see Lara Croft wandering through ruins or reliving several Naughty Dog titles with bots from Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, The Unexplored, and The Last of Us. I love watching my bot collection grow like a colony of worker bees as they help me reach new places in the hub world. You can also add accessories to the massive snake, like cardboard boxes to hide it in. You can also customize your bot with a Bloodborne jacket or turn your DualSense controller into a retro star.
Astro Bot Review aims to be a living museum to the history of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is memorable and goes deeper than just the cosmetics. Many of the levels are designed like theme park games based on popular PlayStation franchises (and even emulations of the game). For example, the Ape Escape level tasks you with hunting down apes, while the God of War level offers a magical axe. With a mix of new mechanics and familiar faces, these sequences are Astro Bot’s most enjoyable elements.
If anything, Astro Bot Review’s infectious enthusiasm for PlayStation inadvertently highlights the brand’s disappointments in recent years (at least for me). Something is fascinating about seeing that mascot costume as a grumpy, sad, mutated old man in an endless third-person “cinematic” shot.
In addition to paying homage to PlayStation’s past, Astro Bot Review offers an interesting and imaginative alternative to future AAA PlayStation games. It also looks great on Nintendo’s console, which is full of demanding cartoons. But on PlayStation, Astro Bot is the only savior in the middle of the desert. No respect for the baggy people.
