In March, SNK revealed the latest installment in its battle royale series, “Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves’ Latest Characters Offer.” The stylish American comedy, thrilling action, and S.P.G. return after a 24-year wait. System. I got to play Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves’ Latest Characters again at Summer Game Fest, but it was still in the knockout stages.
This new show, Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves, takes some lines from the original – sorry, Hotaru and Tizok fans. However, this demo replaces Marco Rodriguez, who was shown in the original trailer introduced in April, and Vox Reaper, one of the two new characters introduced at Summer Game Fest Live. The second, B Janim, is not in my repertoire.
Even before we picked up the controller, we were still impressed with Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves’ Latest Characters’ art style. The “American comedy” style of colors and shading makes all the characters jump off the screen. In an interview with GameSpot after the performance, Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves’ Latest Characters art director Nobuyuki Kuroki said that the visual style, rather than the visual medium, was always the idea.
“If you look at what other game companies are doing, you see modern games with real programming and lively characters,” Kuroki said. “We’ll try to find a space that no one is using and try to explore it and make it our own.” When asked which character best represented what the team had achieved, he quickly replied, “All of them,” and then chose Tizok as the most attractive so far.
In Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves’ Latest Characters, the training, we focused on using Marco and Vox Reaper. We started by exploring Vox, who reminded us of Grant’s little boss from Garou: Mark Of The Wolves. Vox thrives on neutral play; his powerful one-on-one play paid off as the game progressed. The gameplay is patient, where we stay put and wait for an opening before we can continue.
His controlled kick is a valuable asset in his Gunners club, as he can immediately follow up with his special move or other big moves once the move is complete. He also introduces a unique variation from Grant’s Garou gear that will benefit Grant players. Of the two new characters in the lineup, Vos is the one we hope to spend the most time with.
After a few hours spent with Vox, we headed over to Marco’s, and the word “war” resonated with me. Marco’s penchant for violence, which in the SNK version also translates into his ability to fight enemies, especially Ryu and his father, Takumi. Marco plays with a pair of warriors, but his playstyle is more complex and recognizable.
This new branch isn’t the only update from SNK over the weekend, though: one of the other highlights of the season was the addition of Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui to Street Fighter 6. These additions mark Terry and the Main Core’s first collaboration on Street Fighter, though Capcom and SNK are also involved.
Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves’ Latest Characters executive producer Yasuyuki Oda revealed that it all started in 2022, when Evo returned to Las Vegas for the first time since the pandemic. “We worked with SNK and Capcom at Evo 2022,” Oda said, and the two spoke again in the same episode.
“After that, we had dinner and that’s when we started talking,” Oda said, adding that the two companies “are working together now; I know [Fighter 6 designer Takayuki] Nakayama is a big fan of SNK, and we’re big fans of the franchise.”
Fatal Fury: City Of The Wolves’ Latest Characters are more than just a classic battle royale; it also shows the life of SNK in general. With the upcoming matches and friendlies, the team could enter a new era of excitement, and judging by how the City of Wolves has played over the past two seasons, we’re looking forward to what’s next.
